Studying coastal water resources and the impact of rising sea levels in the context of climate change

With sea levels projected to rise, UNDP and the Agence de Protection et d’Aménagement du Littoral (APAL) have set up a resilience program called: « Adressing Climate Change vulnerabilities and risks in vulnerable coastal areas of Tunisia ».
The study seeks to assess the vulnerability of water resources and communities in two coastal areas: Ghar El Mehl and Djerba.The aim of the study is to propose an action plan to prevent saltwater instrusion into the groundwater and soil.

Type of service provide :

  • Determining and assessing the vulnerability of water resources, aquifer geometry and the relationship between different aquifer layers; conducting an isotopic study and hydrodynamic modelling;
  • Creating a GISWEB, an online geographic information system for water resources;
  • Organizing a training workshop for APAL and DGRE staff on modelling and GISWEB;
  • Assessing the vulnerability of communities, estimating losses in arable land;
  • Proposing an action plan to protect the water resource, and recharge aquifers using non-conventional water sources (treated wastewater);
  • Proposing institutional and regulatory arrangements.
