Drawing up a drinking water supply master plan for Mosul

The recent armed conflict in Iraq has caused considerable damage to public service infrastructure, particularly water supply systems. The city of Mosul has been particularly badly affected. An in-depth diagnosis of the water distribution network will be carried out in order to restore the service to working order. The public water supply service must be restored through both short-term planning (humanitarian emergency projects) and long-term planning (development of the necessary infrastructure).

Type of service provided :

Conducting a diagnostic, modelling and implementing the strategic plan for Mosul’s water supply services.

  • Conducting a detailed analysis of water supply functionality and services: carrying out a full inventory of water supply assets (water production, storage and distribution facilities) and creating a GIS database (surface area: 180km²);
  • Developing and calibrating a hydraulic model for a water network of about 1,000km using the Water Gems software, including the primary, secondary and tertiary networks;
  • Implementing a data acquisition system (SCADA) and a remote management plan for water supply network management (9 water treatment plants, 15 pumping stations, 30 water towers with a distribution flow of approximately 100,000m3/day) and integrating the SCADA plan and the remote management component into the hydraulic model;
  • Conducting a diagnostic and providing capacity-building to current operators in order to determine short, medium and long term technical and institutional needs;
  • Planning 5 capacity-building workshops for Water Directorate staff on technical and institutional aspects;
  • Developing long-term strategic service plans (over a 20-year period).
