Assessment of water resources in southern Madagascar

USAID/Madagascar is using the Rural Evidence and Learning for Water (REAL WATER) field support mechanism to:
– collect and analyze existing information on water resource conditions in southern Madagascar; and
– develop potential approaches for USAID programming in the region – approaches that have the potential to be sustainable over the long term and contribute to community resilience.
This project follows the designation of Madagascar as a USAID High Priority Country, a Country to Feed the Future, and a Country for Resilience.

Type of service provided :

The focus is on six of the most water-stressed districts in Madagascar (Betroka, Beliky, Amboasary, Ambovombe, Beloha, Tsihombe):
1. Assessment of :

    • water demand through focus groups, key informant interviews and socio-economic desk study;
    • water resources, both surface and groundwaternd commercial performance;
    • existing institutional arrangements and governance models;
    • water supply systems and providers;

2. Data collection and creation of a geo-referenced dataset
3. Drafting of strategic recommendations for USAID regarding the success or failure of infrastructure and services, the needs of rural water users, management models for drinking and agricultural water supply.
